Materialists writer-director Celine Song is set to write a sequel for the classic ‘90s rom-com My Best Friend’s Wedding.

Song is attached to write, but not direct, the follow-up to the 1997 film, which starred Pretty Woman’s Julia Roberts and The Happy Prince’s Rupert Everett, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed.

The My Best Friend’s Wedding sequel is said to be in early development, so don’t expect the film anytime soon.

My Best Friend’s Wedding follows best friends Jules (Roberts) and Michael (Anyone But You’s Dermot Mulroney), who made a pact that they would get married if they were still single at 28.

As the birthday milestone approaches, Jules gets a call that Michael is engaged to another woman (Charlie’s AngelsCameron Diaz). With the wedding in four days, Jules sets out to sabotage and stop her best friend’s wedding.

The film has become cited as a classic depiction of the ‘gay best friend’ trope. Everett plays Jules’ gay best friend, George, who is always there as a shoulder to lean on.

With Song’s connection to My Best Friend’s Wedding, it seems she has a penchant for love triangles. To date, both of her films, Materialists and Past Lives, have followed ménage à trois relationships.

Materialists stars Dakota Johnson as a New York City matchmaker who finds herself torn between two men. The perfect match is played by The Last of UsPedro Pascal and her imperfect ex is depicted by AvengersChris Evans

Materialists is out now in the US and has a UK release date of 15 August.

Before Materialists, Song’s debut was also an affecting addition to the romantic genre. The Oscar-nominated Past Lives chronicled Problemista’s Greta Lee and Love to Hate You’s Teo Yoo as childhood friends who reconnect decades later.
