Alicia Silverstone shares update on Clueless reboot with crucial character change: ‘She’s evolved’

Alicia Silverstone, star of the iconic late 90s cult classic Clueless, has shared that beloved character Cher Horowitz ‘has evolved’ – and given a production update on the film’s reboot.
Silverstone last portrayed fashionista Cher Horowitz in 1995’s Clueless, in which she ruled the school with bestie Dionne (Stacey Dash), took transfer student Brittany Murphy (Tai Frasier) under her wing and, weirdly, fell in love with her stepbrother (Paul Rudd) – all in outfits that are iconic to this day.
The film was followed by a sitcom series, several books, and a musical but a reboot of the film into a drama series that’s been stuck in development purgatory since 2019 has now received a tantalising update from Silverstone – who is ready to get back into Cher’s shoes, closet and more.
“I can’t wait to step back into Cher’s skin, and her fancy designer shoes that will be gently used, of course, duh. She’s evolved, this is 2025 Cher, she’s not wearing the new stuff – unless it’s sustainable, or vegan,” Silverstone told Entertainment Tonight.
“I mean, we’ll see how far we can go with that, but let’s see!”
“Where we are at with that, is that it’s very early stages,” the star added of the Clueless reboot. “I’m obviously excited, I never thought that that was something that I would ever do, because I wouldn’t want to mess up this this that we all love.
“We will do our very best to honour the original movie that we love, and also bring something new to it. That’s the goal. And I believe we will execute that goal.”
The Clueless reboot series was originally announced in 2019 for CBS and was reportedly planned to be centred around Dionne after Cher goes missing.
At the time, Deadline Hollywood reported it as a “baby pink and bisexual blue-tinted, tiny sunglasses-wearing, oat milk latte and Adderall-fueled look at what happens when the high school queen bee Cher disappears and her lifelong number two Dionne steps into Cher’s vacant Air Jordans.”
The project has moved homes multiple times; in 2020, to NBCUniversal’s Peacock, then in 2021, back to CBS Studios. It was announced in 2025 that the Clueless reboot was back on track for development.
But with Silverstone’s positive update, we’l be saying “Ugh, as if,” in no time.
