X-Men ’97 is set to return for a season two that’s “very, very dark”, according to voice actor Ross Marquand.
Animated series X-Men ’97‘s first season in 2024 gained “phenomenal” reviews on its release for the continuation of iconic 90s animation X-Men: The Animated Series, following the Marvel queer fan-favourite characters as they face new trials and tribulations.
It was renewed for a second (and third) season before season one even premiered, but with the messy departure of gay showrunner and series creator Beau DeMayo, whom Marvel said was fired for ‘egregious’ misconduct, fans have been unsure over the show’s future.
But speaking at the FanX Salt Lake Comic Convention, Ross Marquand, who will be the voice actor for Apocalypse in season two, spilled more than his fair share of the tea on X-Men ’97 season two.
After confirming the season is “very dark” he continued: “I play Apocalypse next season too, so there’s a lot of scenes for myself as Apocalypse. I’m dressed in rags, which is kind of weird, but yeah.”
Marquand added: “[I’m] amazed Disney greenlit it because it’s so dark. It’s very, very dark. A lot of people die, and so many people don’t talk about it. Just being honest.”
Marquand’s admission will set alarms bells ringing for any viewer of season one, because that wasn’t exactly a walk in the park for everyone’s merry band of mutant misfits, with Gambit, Magneto and Moira MacTaggert among characters to have already met their makers (or not).
DeMayo alleged that Disney stripped his season two credits after an X-Men ’97-themed Pride post in June 2024. Marvel released a lengthy statement days later saying he had been fired for “egregious” misconduct.
Season one of X-Men ’97 ended with the X-Men and their allies scattered across time, with one group stuck in the past with Apocalypse, and the other in the future.
X-Men ’97 is streaming on Disney+. No release date has been confirmed for X-Men ’97 season two.
