Cher says she had ‘special arrangement’ with David Geffen and had gay roommate

Cher has discussed her relationship with David Geffen and the “special arrangement” the pair had while dating.

The “Believe” singer dated the producer and media executive during the 1970s while he was in the closet. Geffen came out as gay in 1992.

Joining Dax Shepard on his podcast The Armchair Expert recently, Cher touched on the pair’s relationship.

She said the pair had met at a Christmas party hosted by the record producer, Lou Adler. Discussing life with her ex-husband Sonny Bono, Cher said what she had with Geffen was “a different thing”.

She added: “He never had been in love with anybody. I was the first person that he had real feelings for, so we had a special arrangement.”

Cher also went on to chat about how Geffen helped her get out of a controlling deal with her ex-husband, Sonny Bono.

As Cher wrote in her book, Cher: The Memoir, Geffen showed her 100 per cent of her money was going to Sonny and his lawyer.

Cher said: “It was like [I was] born yesterday. They would bring me a bunch of Cher Enterprises contracts to sign, and it was always when I was getting ready to go on stage.”

Geffen told Cher: “You got to get out of this,” the singer remembered. “So, I went to Sonny and I said, ‘I’ll stay if we’re partners.’ And he said, ‘No.'”

She added: “I couldn’t have done it without David.”

The “Dov’è l’amore” singer also discussed living with a gay roommate in Los Angeles after leaving home at 16.

“She worked for my mom for a while,” she said of her housemate. “When my mom knew I was going, they said, ‘You have to live with her,’ like she was somebody that was going to really keep a rein on me.

“We moved into this apartment, and when my parents left, we smoked a cigarette in every room. We just put in ashtrays everywhere and smoked a cigarette in every room.”

It was here she met Sonny who was more interested at that time in Cher’s roommate.
