Chicago PD’s Sophia Bush talks being ‘bonus mum’ for girlfriend Ashlyn Harris’s kids

Chicago PD star Sophia Bush, who is dating former football player Ashlyn Harris, has given a rare insight into her life as a “bonus mum” for her girlfriend’s children.

Harris adopted daughter Sloane and son Ocean with her ex-wife and fellow footballer Ali Krieger. The couple filed for divorce in September 2023, and Harris and Bush’s relationship was confirmed in April 2024.

Bush, who is also known for her iconic role in One Tree Hill, spoke on TODAY with Jenna & Sheinelle, giving a small glimpse into her relationship with Harris, as the US celebrated Mother’s Day.

She said: “If I’ve learned anything from her and from all of the amazing mums in my life, including my own, I think we’re really in a moment when I can say women need more support, more resources, paid leave would be great… anyone in charge.

“I learned that the best thing I can do for her is give her a moment, just to herself, so I booked her a very long massage. The kids coloured really sweet photos for her.”

The actress, who came out as queer in a April 2024 Glamour interview, explained the massage had been for longer than 90 minutes, but said she couldn’t have done it herself.

“I’m too type A for that,” she said. “I also would’ve been like, ‘I miss you, come hang out.'”

The hosts also quizzed her on being a “bonus mum” for Harris’s kids.

She said: “I think for me, all of the ways I watch women mother, whether it’s my best friend becoming a mum and me being godmother to her kids, falling in love with a mother and being a part of a family… What you really get to see is really the myriad ways that women show up for each other, that they show up for their communities, that we show up for our kids and other people’s, each other’s, and our families and extended families, our communities.

“As stressful as things seem right now, I’m watching so many women organise, activate, make sure their schools have the resources that they need, show up at the school in the neighbourhood one over.”

She finished: “Whether it’s in the four walls of my home or in the world, I think mums A) will save us and B) should literally be in charge of everything. If we were in charge of everything, things would be fixed by lunch. I know this to be true in my bones.”
