Melanie Chisholm has addressed the speculation surrounding her sexuality as leisurewear-clad Sporty Spice.

The singer, better known as Mel C, was often the focus of speculation that she was a lesbian due to her Sporty persona as part of the Spice Girls.

Speaking on The Mitch Churi Chat Show podcast, Mel said: “It was assumed or suggested that I was gay. I don’t personally have a problem with that. I mean, it’s none of their friggin’ business.

“But I just thought it was just… to base it on somebody’s look, or the way that they dress. Yeah, it was a bit s*** of them.”

Mel, alongside her bandmates – Mel B (Scary), Emma Bunton (Baby), Victoria Beckham (Posh), and Geri Horner (Ginger) – became gay icons.

Sporty Spice especially has been a vocal LGBTQ+ ally over the years. She’s also spoken up specifically for the trans community, making it clear the Spice Girls’ “girl power” message was “absolutely” trans-inclusive.

She addresses the group’s LGBTQ+ fanbase in her latest interview too.

“We did have an incredible following in the LGBTQ+ community. We’re like, ‘This is bigger.’ Yeah. ‘This is bigger than us,'” she said.

Who is Mel C dating?

Mel C is very private, but is currently dating Australian model Chris Dingwall. She said on the Life Uncut podcast last year that they met on celebrity dating app Raya.

She recalled thinking she “never wanted to meet anyone ever again” after the end of her last relationship.

“But then you get to this point, and it’s usually on a drunken night out with female friends, and it’s like, ‘You gotta get back out there. You gotta start dating,’ so that’s when the Raya thingy, the profile, was set up.”

Since then, the couple has been photographed together at a number of events.

Mel is also mother to her daughter Scarlett, whom she shares with her ex Thomas Starr.
