Controversial gay movie Blue Film will be released in UK and Irish cinemas in September, it has been confirmed.

The film, starring Reed Birney and Kieron Moore, previously faced troubles when a number of film festivals refused to screen it due to its sensitive content. However, after months of uncertainty, it has been confirmed that it will be released in the UK and Ireland on 25 September, 2026.

The movie, written and directed by Elliot Tuttle, follows Aaron (played by Boots star Kieron Moore) as a webcam performer who meets a mystery client (played by Reed Birney).

Aaron agrees to meet Hank in exchange for $50,000, though he discovers Hank is masked and waiting with a camera. He then asks Aaron a series of uncomfortable questions, before their disturbing connection is realised.

The men then begin to expose their true desires as they shed the carefully constructed personas they have given themselves.

The though-provoking film was released in New York City on 8 May and in LA on 15 May, however details of a UK release took longer to emerge.

Why is Blue Film controversial?

Director Tuttle previously said that the “powers that be” at festivals such as Sundance and SXSW were “scared” to screen Blue Film, while speaking to Variety.

Tuttle continued: “It was unbelievable to me. I believe in the quality of the film, and I also had a hard time believing American festivals were this risk-averse.

“It feels like it kind of took one festival saying, ‘No, it’s OK to program it,’ for lots of other festivals to come on board.”

Given its story of both an age gap duo, who had previously been teacher and student, many would not touch it.

Actor Birney previously told Entertainment Weekly: “I don’t think I thought that it was gonna be as controversial as it was, which is kind of foolish in retrospect.

“Of course, it was gonna be controversial, but I just think I thought it was such a beautiful character study.”
