Maya Hawke and Victoria Pedretti’s sapphic film hits streaming in just days

Maya Hawke and Victoria Pedretti

Maya Hawke and Victoria Pedretti’s sapphic short film The Non-Actor has finally got a release date – and it’s just days away.

After getting its premiere at the International Film Festival Rotterdam in February 2025, the 18-minute movie will be released on Mubi on 10 July.

The film follows Pedretti’s character Elliot as she stays with her ex’s new girlfriend, played by Hawke. The duo take part in a medical trial looking into a “recent, unexplained loss of hearing”.

According to the short’s synopsis, there is also “an intimate connection” between the two of them. Reviews have teased a kiss between the two leads.

Directed by Eliza Callahan, The Non-Actor is loosely adapted from her semi-autobiographical novel The Hearing Test.

Fans have been desperate for a release date, with a number of Letterboxd reviews screaming for it. One person said: “I can’t find this movie anywhere.” Another said: “Please let this be available in digital I cannot find it anywhere not even in IMDb.”

Hawke and Pedretti as sapphic icons

Maya Hawke cemented herself as a favourite among the LGBTQ+ community thanks to a number of queer roles.

Most famously, she portrayed Robin in Netflix smash Stranger Things. In the sci-fi drama, Robin was a lesbian, something Hawke herself pushed for.

Similarly, Victoria Pedretti played Dani in The Haunting of Bly Manor, also on Netflix. In the horror drama, Dani falls for gardener Jamie (played by Amelia Eve).

Pedretti also confirmed she was bisexual or fluid on Instagram.
