Bonnie Tyler dies aged 75 as fans pay tribute to Total Eclipse of the Heart icon

‘Total Eclipse of the Heart’ singer Bonnie Tyler has died at the age of 75, it has been announced.
A message was shared on the Welsh singer’s official website confirming the sad news. It read: “Bonnie’s family and team are heartbroken to announce that Bonnie unexpectedly passed away last night in hospital in Portugal as a result of the illness that she was being treated for.”
It continued: “We will issue a further statement shortly but for now ask for privacy to deal with this tragedy.”
Tyler had been having a number of health issues, and was placed in an induced coma in May after emergency surgery in Portugal.
In June, she woke up from the coma but a spokesperson for the star said she was still “very unwell and in intensive care”.
Tributes to a ‘legend’
Fans have rushed to social media to share their condolences. One said: “Bonnie Tyler has passed away. Rest in peace, legend.” Another said: “Not Bonnie Tyler,” adding a heartbroken emoji.
A third said: “RIP Bonnie Tyler. As a young lad she was my heart throb. What a lovely voice she had, rest in peace.” Another added: “The world lost a great personality.”
Tyler was best known for her track ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart’, which saw her become the first Welsh person to get a No1 in America.
She previously told BBC News: “I never get tired of singing it. I love it because everyone can’t wait to sing it.”
Tyler released 18 studio albums spanning from 1977 to 2021, with the most recent titled The Best Is Yet to Come.
In 1984, she was nominated for two Grammy Awards, getting a third in 1985. She was also nominated for three Brit Awards in 1977, 1984 and 1986.
She is survived by her husband Robert Sullivan, a former Olympian in judo. They had no children.
