Colman Domingo to write original Princess And The Frog film about Tiana

Colman Domingo is reportedly writing a screenplay for an original live-action film based on Tiana from Disney’s 2009 musical animation The Princess and the Frog.
According to Deadline, the Sing Sing and The Four Seasons star is teaming up with Tony Award-winning Slave Play director Robert O’Hara, who is also on writing duties, to bring the story to life.
The Princess and the Frog is famed for being both the first Disney animated film to feature a Black character in the lead role, and the last Disney film to be produced using hand-drawn animation techniques.
The original film follows Tiana (voiced by Anika Noni Rose), a waitress who dreams of opening her own restaurant. Against the backdrop of 1920s New Orleans, Tiana is tasked with turning frog prince Naveen back into a human after he was cursed by an evil witch doctor. However, more problems arise when Tiana herself is also turned into a frog.
Based on E.D. Baker’s novel The Frog Princess, the film features a wealth of songs written by Toy Story songwriter Randy Newman, including ‘Almost There’, ‘Friends on the Other Side’, ‘Dig a Little Deeper’ and ‘Down in New Orleans’.
Not much is currently known about Domingo and O’Hara’s retelling of the story, but the project isn’t Domingo’s first venture into scriptwriting.
The Academy Award-nominated actor has penned many scripts for the stage in his time, including Up Jumped Springtime (1998), Dot (2015) and Summer: The Donna Summer Musical (2017), which he co-wrote with Robert Cary and Des McAnuff.
Summer: The Donna Summer Musical first premiered at La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego, and was then produced on Broadway at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre in 2018.
