An older gay couple’s 53-year relationship has gone viral after a Meet Cutes NYC Instagram reel introduced viewers to New Yorkers Allan and Tony, who have been together since 1973.
The post has amassed more than 1.2million likes, turning a simple tennis-court meet-cute into a rare mainstream moment for queer ageing.
In the short Q&A, Allan recalls seeing Tony for the first time and thinking: “Hot.” Tony’s first impression was less flattering. “Not good,” he says, adding: “I thought I was wasting my time.”
The clip also captures the couple’s dry humour and steadiness. Asked what he loves about Tony, Allan points to his “good heart”, calling it his “best organ”. Tony, describing Allan’s consistency, sums it up in two words: “No waves.”
Allan and Tony’s longevity is part of what has made the video so shareable.
Allan also shares the kind of practical relationship advice that viewers tend to pass on. “Care more about the other person than you care about yourself,” he says. He follows it with a small example: “When you get up to get a soda, you have to ask the other person, ‘Would you like a soda?’ Without even thinking.”
‘How could anyone be against love like this?’
Instagram users have completely fallen in love with the couple, sharing their joy at the display of queer love in a time when LGBTQ+ rights are under attack.
“How could anyone ever be against a love like this?” one person commented, with it getting more than 106,000 likes. Another said: “That’s love.”
A third commented: “And I still don’t know how people call this a sun.”
Someone else said: “Seeing older gay couples always makes me cry. My uncles would have been together 42 years next month had AIDS not taken that away from them. I hope this couple has many more years together.”
Another added: “The loveliest thing I’ve seen all day.”
