Gay men over the age of 30 have been giving advice to their younger self in a surprisingly heartwarming Reddit thread.
On r/AskGaybrowsOver30, one Redditor shared his own message to his 22-year-old self before inviting other users to do the same.
He explained: “A lot of the things I once placed enormous value on – sexual freedom, hookups, FWBs, always having another guy available – just don’t mean very much to be anymore. Looking back, some of it honestly makes me cringe a little.”
The user said younger gay men “should experience things and figure out what they like”, but explained he recalled a feeling of “emptiness” during that period of his life.
He added: “I’d tell my younger self that being gay can become something much bigger than sex. You can actually build a life that makes all of that chasing feel pretty insignificant in retrospect.”
Other responses flooded in, with some more light-hearted like stop eating so many takeaways, or stop spending so much money. But among them were some seriously heart-warming pieces of advice, that anyone of any age could take on board.
‘Be kinder to yourself’
One person, sharing their own self-advice, said: “Don’t base your self worth on being young and cute. Youth is fleeting.”
Another said: “You’ll find love when you’re ready. Don’t try to make that one guy work. It’s okay to let a hot guy ho.”
Someone else said: “You are gay. It will be okay. You can still live the life you want. You just have to do them in order.”
Another commented: “Be braver. Be kinder to yourself. Be kinder to others. Surround yourself with loving, like-minded friends. It gets better, not easier. Don’t miss your chances to find love.”
One user said: “Put you first. No one else is going to do the things you’re expecting from life for you.”
