First look at Andrew Garfield as OpenAI billionaire Sam Altman in Artificial

The trailer for Artificial has dropped, giving us a first glimpse at Andrew Garfield as OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.
The film, directed by Luca Guadagnino, follows Altman during a pivotal era at the company, including the launch of ChatGPT.
In the trailer, Garfield – who admitted he’s “really scared” of backlash to the movie – declares as Altman: “We opened Pandora’s box together.
“The future is inevitable. Countries will fall. Industries are gonna collapse. And we get to be the ones to shepherd people into this new world. I’m so excited to see it.”
Altman came out as gay in a blog post in 2015, and in 2024 married his longtime partner, Oliver Mulherin, a software engineer. In 2025, they welcomed a baby together.
Speaking to The Advocate in 2024, Altman spoke about being an out gay CEO in the tech world, saying: “I am extremely grateful to be where I am, and I think about how grateful I am every day. I don’t really think about being a gay CEO. I don’t look at it that way.
“What I know is that it took an enormous amount of work and sacrifice from a lot of people over a very long period of time to get where we are today.”
Andrew Garfield’s concern
Speaking on the SmartLess podcast, Garfield admitted he was a little worried about the film’s release.
He said: “I’m nervous about that one. I’m really scared about that one.”
When asked if he meant “backlash”, he replied: “Well, yeah. You’re playing one of arguably that most powerful people on this planet right now, or an interpretation of this person.”
Garfield also stressed he has not met Altman. “I’ve never met Sam Altman, I don’t know anything about the interior of his soul. I just had to interpret what I understood, what I saw, what I read, what my imagination gave me, and what the script gave me,” he said.
He later joked Altman had “probably hacked my phone” and was “probably observing every move I make”.
