What is ‘Ozempic penis’ and is it a good thing? Surgeon explains all

You’ve probably heard of “Ozempic face” – the side-effect of rapid weight loss that causes someone’s face to look hollowed out. But it turns out there’s such a thing as “Ozempic penis”, too.

The phenomenon of “Ozempic face” came with the rapid rise of people using GLP-1 medication for weight loss. While Ozempic is actually a medication used to manage type 2 diabetes, it has been attributed to the quickly shrinking frames of celebrities due to its weight loss effects.

Put simply, GLP-1 medications help control blood sugar levels within the body and make people feel full after eating, therefore reducing someone’s appetite.

There are a number of branded GLP-1 medications, including Ozempic, Wegovy and Mounjaro, and all are prescription-only.

But that’s not what you’re here for, so let’s get into it.

What is ‘Ozempic penis’?

Speaking on Paul C Brunson’s We Need To Talk podcast, plastic surgeon Dr Terry Dubrow (husband of Real Housewives of Orange County‘s Heather Dubrow) revealed men don’t see as many obvious negative side effects as women.

While women may experience “Ozempic vulva” – a sagging around the area due to rapid weight loss – the same for men may actually be something few would complain about.

Dubrow, who has recently became board certified in GLP-1 medication because he’s “obsessed” with them, said: “If you think about it, men who are very obese and have a lot of pubic fat and inner thigh fat, if you’re really fat you have what we call Buried Penis Syndrome, you can’t find it in there.

“So, if you take Ozempic or one of these drugs and you lose all of the surrounding fat, your penis looks bigger.”

He suggested “Ozempic penis” is a good thing, adding: “How lucky are we guys? We’re always winning. We don’t have to menstruate or have kids. The plumbing is always the same, and our penises get bigger when we lose weight.”

The Botched star added: “‘Ozempic vulva’ is bad. ‘Ozempic penis’ is good.”

But…

Of course, this isn’t your sign to run out and get a GLP-1 prescription, if general weight loss is your goal.

These medications require a prescription, and not everyone is eligible for them.

Generally, eligible patients have a BMI of 30 or above, or around 27 to 29.9 if they also have issues such as high blood pressure or sleep apnoea.

They are also prescribed to people with type 2 diabetes, as an aid in managing blood sugar levels.

The medications can also come with a number of uncomfortable side effects, including nausea and vomiting, trouble going to the toilet, bloating, heartburn or avid reflux, as well as fatigue and dizziness.
