Ellie Goulding calls out own fan for anti-LGBTQ+ comment: ‘No thank you’

Ellie Goulding has publicly shut down anti-LGBTQ+ sentiment in her fan community, telling a user on X: “We don’t tolerate any anti LGBTQ+ in the fandom.”
In a post on X, the British singer-songwriter replied directly to a user who told her: “I’m so glad your recent outfits are so feminine – lace, silk. They really highlight your beauty; I prefer them over those ‘trans’ looks aimed at a specific community, and I think you do too – you’ve been looking lovely lately.”
Goulding replied: “Girl, no thank you. We don’t tolerate any anti LGBTQ+ in the fandom. I know you are better than this.” Her post has had more than 35,000 likes and 1.4million views since it was posted on 26 September.
Since Goulding’s response, the original user has made their account private so their initial post isn’t visible.
They have however shared a post on their Instagram Story, which reads: “Referring to recent events, I am disappointed in Ellie. She could’ve just tweeted a random post about supporting LGB+ people. She knows exactly what was going to happen after she tweeted that reply to me. She has to ‘stay on trend’ on X.”
What other fans said
Fans showed support for Goulding under her post, with some confused one of her fans would have those opinions.
“The concept of a bigoted Ellie Goulding fan,” one said. Another said: “That’s just earned you a lot more LGBT+ followers.”
Someone else wrote: “Seeing you advocate against hate towards the LGBTQ+ community is so reassuring and never goes unnoticed. Your advocacy and constant support means to much to many of us.”
And another added: “Thank you for standing up to s*** like this Ellie.”
Goulding’s history of speaking out
Goulding broke through in the late 2000s and became a major chart presence in the 2010s, with hits including “Lights”, “Burn” and “Love Me Like You Do”. In recent years, she has become as known for her music as spoof posts, which she has been leaning into recently too.
The posts, from Fake Showbiz News, paint Goulding in a very confused light. However she has been referencing the posts and getting in on the joke at recent gigs.
She has also previously taken public positions linked to LGBTQ+ issues. In 2019, she threatened to pull out of her performance at the NFL’s Thanksgiving Day halftime show over The Salvation Army’s track record, after discrimination allegations.
