Danny Ramirez says Pedro Pascal is ‘easiest person to have chemistry with’ in gay movie De Noche

Danny Ramirez has opened up about working with Pedro Pascal on new gay movie De Noche, in which they play lovers.

The film, directed by Todd Haynes, follows Pascal as a detective and Ramirez as a teacher. The two fall in love and are forced to leave Los Angeles to flee to Mexico.

Filming wrapped in April 2026, after Pascal took over his role from Joaquin Phoenix, who had originally been developing the script with Jon Raymond and Haynes.

Speaking of the movie, Ramirez told Variety at the Academy Museum Gala that Pascal “is the easiest person ever to have chemistry with”.

He continued: “Being directed by Todd, and being opposite of Pedro in that film, it was one of those moments where I’m like, it is one of the luckiest things as an actor to be opposite someone that has so much talent and being led by someone with such a vision, and it really made it clear like that.

“A fantastic script, a phenomenal director and scene partner make the job so much easier. The collaboration between those two, I wish every film was like that.”

Long road to producing De Noche

Haynes, Raymond and Phoenix had been developing a script for De Noche, with Phoenix set to appear. However, Haynes revealed Phoenix wanted him to push the film’s explicit content, which would likely see it given an NC-17 rating.

Ramirez joined the project in July 2024, but it was suddenly cancelled when Phoenix quit – apparently getting “cold feet”.

Christine Vachon, a producer on the film, said in a now-deleted social media post that it had been “a nightmare”. Vachon added: “If you are tempted to finger wag or admonish us that ‘that’s what you get for casting a straight actor’ – DON’T. This was HIS project that he brought to US.”

Good news came in August 2025, when it was reported that the movie was back on, with Pascal in the helm.

By February, production was in full swing, with filming starting in March, primarily in Mexico City.

There is no confirmed release date as of yet.
