Jamie Babbit chosen to direct lesbian feature film
The openly lesbian film director Jamie Babbit has been selected to helm the first feature film for Los Angeles based gay group Power Up, the feminist comedy The Itty Bitty Titty Committee.
Ms Babbit, whose projects include But I’m a Cheerleader and the TV series Popular, has rounded up a veritable who’s who of stars for the film, which centres on a woman (Melonie Diaz) who finds her purpose in life after she hooks up with a radical underground feminist group.
Nicole Vicius, Carly Pope, Daniela Sea, Melanie Mayron, Jimmi Simpson, Leslie Grossman and Guinevere Turner round out the cast. Both Ms Pope and Ms Grossman starred for Babbit in Popular. Sea is currently on Showtime’s The L Word.
Since its inception four years ago, Power Up has developed, financed, produced and distributed short films and has awarded filmmaking grants totalling more than $1.5 million. Principal photography begins this Saturday.
“They are very excited about getting into the feature world, especially because there are so few lesbian features out there,” said Babbit, whose credits also include Nip/Tuck, Alias, Gilmore Girls and Malcolm in the Middle.
