After a summer of watching Olympic cycling success for Team GB, what better way to build up those leg muscles than by joining Cycle Out London. Rory Desch profiles one of its members, Iain Clark.

Iain Clark, from Pimlico joined Cycle Out after becoming bored of going to bars and nightclubs. Iain really enjoys getting out on his bicycle and seeing new parts of the country – so Cycle Out seemed like the perfect club for him. He’s not regretted it one bit. As a result, Iain has become a better cyclist and formed some great friendships. Iain even met his partner through the club!

Iain is recently back from a cycling tour in Norfolk, which he says is really “not that flat at all”. Unlike other cycling clubs out there, Cycle Out is not a competitive club; it’s more about getting everyone involved. No matter what level you are when you join, Cycle Out organises different rides at varying levels and grades from a leisurely cycle around London to medium paced rides lasting 35 – 50 miles.

Since joining Cycle Out, Iain feels he’s had so many great experiences that it’s hard to pick the best one, but if he had to, his holiday in the Cheddar Gorge comes to the forefront. The satisfaction of not having to get off his bicycle to push it up the gorge was truly immense. Cycle Out has given Iain the opportunity to cycle not just in the UK, but also in Spain and Italy.

To anyone thinking of joining they should not be deterred by costs, once you become a member (£10 for membership). All rides are free. Usually the only cost you need to pay is for an off-peak train fare, costing around £12. Lunch is generally secured in a pub along the way though many choose to bring a packed lunch along with them.

Cycle Out is a great environment for LGBT cycling enthusiasts. Its members are easy going in nature, friendly and supportive and provide a warm welcome to all new members. The club regularly host social events throughout the year too.
