Openly gay NBA star Jason Collins has made the decision to wear the number 98 shirt for his new team in commemoration of murdered gay teenager Matthew Shepard.

On top of that, yesterday saw the shirt soar to the top of online sales on the NBA’s online store.

Collins has changed his Brooklyn Nets jersey from today, when the team visits the Portland Trail Blazers.

He wears the number 98 in commemoration of Matthew Shepard, a Wyoming gay teenager who was brutally murdered in 1998.

Before coming out as gay last year in an interview with Sports Illustrated, Collins wore the number 98 jersey in 38 matches for the Boston Celtics and Washington Wizards.

Collins signed a 10-day deal on Sunday evening with the Brooklyn Nets, to become the first openly-gay active NBA player.
