Stranger Things prequel coming to Netflix as new live-action series

Netflix has announced Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure

Netflix has announced a live-action Stranger Things prequel series, Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure, set in Nevada in 1955, releasing in 2028.

The announcement was made on “Stranger Things Day” (6 November), the annual fan celebration marking the in-universe date Will Byers disappeared on 6 November, 1983.

The teaser is short but ominous: an abandoned bike sits near a restricted area under nightfall, with a town visible in the distance, before a disturbance ripples across the sky.

When and where is Other Worlds set?

Other Worlds is a prequel set in the 1950s, before the events of Stranger Things and stage play Stranger Things: The First Shadow. The teaser’s on-screen text places it in 1955 in Marion, Nevada, with the date specified as April 19.

Plot details are still being kept under wraps, but the creative team has been confirmed. The series is co-created by Matt and Ross Duffer and writer Kate Trefry, with Trefry serving as showrunner and executive producer. Joe Wright is slated to direct the opening three episodes and executive produce.

The series will film in New Mexico.

In a statement, the Duffer brothers said: “We’ve been dreaming of Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure for many years now, and to see it become a reality is surreal and exhilarating.” They teased “new heroes and villains” before adding: “Now, on to casting. In the meantime watch the skies, nerds!”

Who is making the Stranger Things prequel?

Netflix’s head of scripted series for the US and Canada, Jinny Howe, said: “Today, on Stranger Things Day, we’re honoured to partner again with Matt and Ross Duffer and Kate Trefry to give fans a new dimension of this universe to step into.”

Trefry added: “The Duffer Brothers gave me my first paying job in Hollywood, and it has been a joy and a fever dream ever since,” calling it her “insane honour and privilege” to bring the new chapter to life.

Stranger Things debuted in 2016 and became a global phenomenon, known for its 1980s nostalgia, ensemble cast and supernatural mythology of parallel dimensions and government experiments. The franchise has already expanded beyond the main series, including a stage show that opened in the West End in 2023, with the Duffers saying at the time: “We are beyond excited about Stranger Things: The First Shadow.”
