In a video recorded for PinkNews, Labour leader Ed Miliband has congratulated campaigners and MPs for their work towards same-sex marriage.

In the video, during which he congratulates PinkNews for campaigning for same-sex marriage, and says it is a “proud moment” for Britain, he goes on to say that there is work to be done.

“I want to send all of my congratulations and best wishes to all of those who will be getting married over the next few weeks and months. This is an incredibly happy time for so many gay couples and lesbian couples who will be getting married.

“This is an incredibly proud time for our country as well, recognising equal marriage in law, I’m incredibly proud of the part that Labour MPs played in this cross-party effort to put equal marriage on the statute book.

“I want to congratulate PinkNews for the work that they’ve done too. I know the battle for equality is not yet won, there are many more strides we’ve got to take. But this is an incredibly important moment.

“Most of all I want to congratulate all the campaigners who made it possible. It was you that said this had to happen – that we had to have equal marriage in law. So congratulations to you on this incredible important victory and this incredibly proud moment for Britain.”

Writing for PinkNews today, Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg paid tribute to the overwhelming support for same-sex marriage as it is set to take effect in England and Wales, and emphasises that there is more to be done before equality is reached, both in the UK and abroad.
