Olivier Award-winning playwright Kevin Elyot dies, aged 62

Award-winning playwright Kevin Elyot, best known for ‘My Night With Reg’, has died, aged 62.

The playwright, who often explored gay issues in his plays and films, passed away this week after a long illness.

He is well known for films ‘Clapham Junction’, ‘No Night is Too Long’, and ‘Christopher and His Kind.’

Elyot, who was born in Birmingham, was an actor before he made his debut at the Bush Theatre as a playwright in 1982, with ‘Coming Clean’.

‘My Night With Reg’, possibly his best known play, won an Olivier Award in 1995, and is due to be revived at the Donmar Warehouse this July-September.

To mark the 40th anniversary of the decriminalisation of homosexuality in England Wales  in 2007, Channel 4 showed ‘Clapham Junction’.
