Despite instructions from the Italian Interior Ministry this morning, the Mayor of Bologna has refused to annul the marriages of gay and lesbian couples entered into abroad.

Earlier today, Interior Minister Angelino Anfano blocked the recognition of same-sex marriages entered into abroad, saying they cannot be recognised by the country, as gay couples are not allowed to marry there.

The city of Bologna began recognising overseas same-sex marriages last month.

Alfano went on to say that marriages between same-sex couples entered into abroad, and which have already been entered into registers by civil authorities must be cancelled and removed.

The Mayor of Bologna, Virginio Merola, has since said he would not follow the instructions, reports Ansa.

He said: “If they want to annul the transcriptions of marriages contracted abroad, let them. I won’t take my signature off…So let them do it but not in the name of Bologna, which I represent. I won’t obey.”
