Batman’s sidekick Robin will reportedly be played by actress Jena Malone in the upcoming ‘Batman vs Superman’ film.

The sidekick role – briefly filled by Joseph Gordon-Levitt in The Dark Knight Rises – has apparently been made female for the reboot, which stars Ben Affleck as Batman opposite Henry Cavill’s Superman.

According to a Detroit news report, Jena Malone – who was raised by same-sex parents and is a strong equality advocate – was seen on the film’s set in the city.

The Hunger Games star has fuelled speculation of her casting, after she revealed that she had dyed her hair red for a role.

In the comic book universe, the role of Robin has been filled by many different characters, with a female Robin – the red-haired Carrie Kelley – introduced in the 1980s.

Jena Malone was raised by her mother Debbie Malone and her female partner, though the pair have since split.

She said previously: “I grew up with two mums. They were lovers until I was nine. Then they split up. I was the product of a one-night stand. But I met my father once when I was four.

“He lives somewhere in Reno. The thing is, I had two loving parents. Love in any shape or form is a beautiful thing. I didn’t grow up missing my father.”
