A bull which was facing slaughter because its owner thought it was gay has been saved by a Hollywood producer.

The fundraising campaign to save Benjy the Charolais bull was started by TheGayUK and Ireland’s Animal Rights Action Network (ARAN).

It came after a farmer in Ireland said he would send Benjy to the slaughterhouse for showing more interest in other bulls than with cows.

Now Simpsons co-creator Sam Simon, has put forward £5,000 in order to save Benjy. The fee will cover the cost of moving him to a sanctuary where he will be allowed to move

“PETA told me about Benjy, and I felt compelled to help. All animals have a dire destiny in the meat trade, but to kill this bull because he’s gay would’ve been a double tragedy,” said Simon.

“It thrills me to help PETA and ARAN make Benjy’s fate a sanctuary rather than a sandwich.”

Homosexual behaviour has been observed in a number of species in the animal kingdom.

A journal earlier this year reported the first known instance of two male brown bears engaging in oral sex.

The zookeepers wrote: “In the case reported here, the provider may have found a substitute for teat‐sucking that also resulted in a let‐down of substitute ‘milk’.”
