Football pundit Stan Collymore slammed for ‘homophobic’ tweet

Former footballer turned pundit Stan Collymore has been criticised by anti-homophobia groups for a tweet in which he used the word “fairies” to describe players who dive.

Collymore tweeted in reference to the controversial decision to caution Sergio Aguero of Manchest City, who took a tumble in Southampton’s penalty area on Sunday.

Making reference to racehorse Devon Lock, who fell inexplicably despite looking set to win the 1956 Grand National, Collymore said: “Easiest thing to slaughter a ref. Maybe if they didn’t have so many fairies going down like Devon Lock we’d get less confused decisions.”

Campaign group Football v Homophobia condemned the tweet as “homophobic”, telling ITV: “Whatever you think about diving… homophobic abuse is unacceptable.”
