Labour MP Jess Phillips has shut down an MP who opposed equal marriage – after he claimed he “always” votes for true equality.

Tory MP for Shipley Philip Davies is a regular voter against LGBT rights laws, and strongly opposed same-sex marriage.

He appeared on the Daily Politics show yesterday to discuss a planned Parliamentary date on International Men’s Day – arguing opposite Labour MP Jess Phillips.

However, the pair clashed when Davies claimed that he had always voted for ‘true’ equality.

He claimed: “I always vote in favour of true equality… I don’t know if Jess was selected on an all-women shortlist for her selection.”

Ms Phillips hit back: “Did you vote for gay marriage?”

He insisted: “I don’t agree with gay marriage! Why would I vote for something I don’t agree with?

“That bill has nothing to do with equality – it’s not equal marriage at all! It’s not equality.

“Jess has a strange view of equality, which is the groups that she supports should have more equality than other people.”

Ms Phillips hit back at the Tory MP, accusing him of having a “basic” view of equality.
