Zac Goldsmith explains why he accidentally said he was pansexual for London
London Mayoral candidate Zac Goldsmith has explained why he accidentally said he wanted to be pansexual for all of London.
The Conservative candidate for a Mayor of London made the awkward mix-up while speaking to PinkNews earlier this month.
When asked what kind of Mayor he wanted to be, after a discussion about sexuality, he said: “I would use the term pansexual here, if my understanding is correct! I would be the mayor for all of London.”
Speaking at the Pride in London hustings this evening, Mr Goldsmith spoke about the interview – which ended up splashed across the political pages.
He said: “Last time I spoke on this topic just a few weeks ago I was doing an interview with PinkNews, and I inadvertently told them that I wanted to be a pansexual Mayor of London.
“I have to admit now that I wasn’t and remain not a 100 percent sure what that meant, but it sounded like an inclusive, all-encompassing One London type of approach that would define my Mayoralty.
“It didn’t mean, as a number of absolutely furious people suggested to me via email, that I intended to rush around having it off with every Londoner.”
Mr Goldsmith passionately spoke about his belief in equality at the event, saying “it would break my heart to think of one of my kids suffering because they felt unable to be themselves”, supporting a “zero tolerance” approach to hate crime and pledging to protect London’s LGBT venues
The event was also attended by Labour’s Sadiq Khan, Liberal Democrat Carolione Pidgeon, UKIP’s Peter Whittle, the Green Party’s Sian Berry and the Women’s Equality Party candidate Sophie Walker.
