The two women were allegedly subjected to homophobic abuse and physical threats by their Uber driver over the weekend.

An Australian couple have expressed their shock and outrage after they received verbal and physical abuse from an Uber driver in Melbourne over the weekend.

Lucy Thomas and her girlfriend were catching an Uber home and chatting about an upcoming football game when their driver began calling them “faggots”.

Thomas said the driver – who she called John – became threatening and aggressive when he realised they were in a same-sex relationship.

“The driver said he hated football because it was a bunch of faggots jumping around and touching each other,” she told the Star Observer.

“I told him that I understood the spirit of what he was saying but that the word was deeply offensive to me and a lot of other people.

“He then asked us – why are you worried, are you gay?”

Thomas said her partner immediately said yes, while she told him that their sexuality was irrelevant.

Throughout the remainder of the trip, Thomas said John made a number of homophobic and racist remarks.

However, things grew worse for the couple – as they arrived at her house, the driver continued to make offensive remarks and refused to let the pair leave his cab.

Thomas then pulled out her phone, before recording the blunt end of the interaction.

“What are you going to do, give me a low rating and make a complaint,” the driver can be heard asking in the clip.

“When I write my report about two faggots who don’t like being called faggots, what’re they going to say?

“Get out of the car… if you don’t I’ll get out and drag you out.”

Thomas has since revealed that Uber has fired the driver in question, after she reported his behaviour to the police.

Last year, PinkNews exclusively revealed that a London Uber driver had been suspended – after kicking out a gay passenger because of his sexuality.
