Another Soho gay bar has closed its doors suddenly
Another gay bar in Soho has closed its doors.
Molly Moggs, a popular drag and cabaret bar in London’s Soho, shut this morning suddenly.
According to QX, staff were allegedly only given a week’s notice.
Visitors to the venue reportedly had no idea it was about to close – and it’s not known if it will ever re-open as an LGBT venue.
An official statement from Molly Moggs’ Facebook page read: “It comes with a heavy heart that we have to inform you all of this situation.
“Unfortunately today we say goodbye to the Molly Moggs that we’ve all loved for many years.
“We can’t thank our loyal customers and our new customers enough for sticking with us through the thick and thin and making it such a valuable part of Soho.
“Who knows what the future holds for good old Molly’s but for now ‘there will be no singing drag queens at Molly Moggs.
“Once again, thank you from all of us. The queens, the management, the staff and the owners.”
The small venue had become renowned for it Sunday drag shows, often surprising passing tourists with its loud evening shows.
London’s Night Czar Amy Lamé told PinkNews: “I am devastated to hear that London has lost yet another iconic LGBT+ venue in Soho.
“The importance of these venues cannot be overstated in the role they play in the LGBT+ community and the contribution they make to London’s buzzing nightlife.
“We need to stem the flow of these closures now – this is a key priority for me as Night Czar and I’m looking into the specific circumstances that have led to the unexpected closure of Molly Moggs.”
The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, is helping to fund research into the closure of LGBT venues across the capital, as part of City Hall’s Culture Infrastructure Plan to protect venues in future.
It comes after the UK’s oldest LGBT venue, the Royal Vauxhall Tavern, won the latest stage of its ongoing battle against closure.
