Drag queens share their stories about Pulse massacre
Two Orlando-based drag queens have opened up about how they narrowly avoided the Pulse gay bar massacre.
Drag queens Trinity Taylor and Cynthia Lee Fontaine opened up about their relationship to the Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando on the latest episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race.
In the clip above, contestant Eureka asks Orlando resident Trinity Taylor about her experience of the Pulse shooting in June last year.
Trinity said: “I actually wasn’t in Orlando at that very moment but I am a former Miss Pulse,” and goes on to say she entertained at the club on the same night a week before, “So it is scary to think that literally could have been me.”
Cynthia Lee Fontaine shares she was supposed to perform that night and had to re-schedule. A friend of hers, who came to the club to see Cynthia perform, was killed.
“We never expect that a tragedy like this happens in our community, happen in our clubs because we thought we had finally created a safe space for our community,” Cynthia said.
49 people were shot dead and 53 were wounded at Pulse nightclub in Orlando on 12 June 2016. This season of Drag Race was filmed two months after the massacre inside of the club.
Trinity is not the first to represent the Pulse nightclub on Drag Race. Past contestants include: Tyra Sanchez who won season two as well as Roxxxy Andrews, Detox and Coco Montrese, Jade Jolie on season five.
