If you’re tired of dressing up as sexy versions of crap things for Halloween – aka the most wonderful time of the year – you might need some costume inspiration.

And, as us queer people have been terrifying others for years, we’ve put together some of our favourite LGBT looks for All Hallows’ Eve.

Piper Chapman and Alex Vause – Orange is the New Black

If you and your other half are looking for a couples outfit, this one’s really easy. For those of you who don’t know, Piper and Alex are Litchfield Penitentary’s longterm lesbians.

(They’re even getting married…if they survive season 6.)

You can buy inmate costumes online, or just put some orange things on, if you can’t be arsed. Alternatively, chuck some food down a white vest as per above and below.

If Piper and Alex aren’t your cup of tea, other excellent LGBT characters from OITNB include Poussey Washington, Sophia Burset, Suzanne ‘Crazy Eyes’ Warren, Big Boo, Nicky Nichols – and so on.

Oberyn Martell and Ellaria Sand – Game of Thrones

If you’re an incredibly talented seamstress, or have loads of money to employ someone to create Thrones-themed outfits, then we’d recommend going as this raucous bisexual pair.

You can probably put something together on a budget, though – perhaps a dressing gown with a large leather belt, leather boots and a spear. DONE.

The Babadook

Why not embrace The Babadook’s newfound status as an LGBT icon? He’s the monster with a heart of rainbows.

Dook, doooook, DOOOOOK, DOOOOOOOOK.

Yorkie and Kelly – Black Mirror

The fourth episode of Charlie Brooker’s Black Mirror season 3 follows the touching relationship of Yorkie and Kelly.

Sure, it’s eventually revealed that the duo are actually living in a simulated reality for the dying and the deceased, but that seems pretty appropriate for Halloween.

Set several decades in the future, the pair sport various superb outfits – though you’ll probably be fighting over who gets to go as Kelly, pictured left.

Loras Tyrell and Renly Baratheon – Game of Thrones

In Game of Thrones’ first season, Ser Loras and Lord Renly are revealed to be lovers.

“You would be a wonderful King,” says Loras, right before he goes down on Renly.

We recommend a blouse for Loras and a stag/antlers crown for Renly, with as much blood spatter as you like for the now-deceased pair. Easily done.

Sappho

Greek poet Sappho is the perfect idol for lesbians to dress up as for Halloween.

Why? Because finding or making a Greek Goddess costume is ridiculously easy.

Plus, she’s the reason we’re called sapphists, or lesbians, being that she’s from the island of Lesbos.

Dumbledore – Harry Potter

Way back in 2007, after the publication of the final Harry Potter book, JK Rowling revealed that Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore was gay. Hurray!

At the time, she said: “It has certainly never been news to me that a brave and brilliant man could love other men.

“He is my character. He is what he is and I have the right to say what I say about him.”

A beard, a robe and a cloak should suffice to dress as your favourite gay headmaster.

Alexander Hamilton

Alexander Hamilton is currently most famous for being the subject of the incredible Broadway musical Hamilton, as well as for being the face of the $10 note.

And according to some historians, he could also be one of the most influential gay men in American history, having shared a close relationship with statesman John Laurens while both were soldiers during the revolutionary war.

See above for some superb Hamilton cosplay.

It’s time to dress like you need it to survive. Do not throw away your shot.

Yara Greyjoy – Game of Thrones

We voted Yara our favourite lesbian character on TV, and she featured in our list of LGBT scenes in Game of Thrones, so it’s only fair that we strongly advise all of our readers to dress up as Yara this year.

And not least because we really, really miss her after douchebag Euron nabbed her in season 7, following that lesbian kiss.

Megan Broomfield – But I’m a Cheerleader

Jamie Babbit’s 1999 romantic comedy stars Natasha Lyonne (Orange is the New Black) as Megan Bloomfield, a high school cheerleader who gets sent to therapy camp True Directions to ‘cure her lesbianism.’

If you’re a fan of looking girly and inoffensive at Halloween, just go down the lesbian cheerleader route and you won’t be mocked too hard for a lack of originality.

Lana Winters – American Horror Story

Before being locked up in Briarcliff asylum in 1964 for being a lesbian, Lana is in a secret relationship with school teacher Wendy Peyser – who is later murdered by serial killer ‘Bloody Face’.

While incarcerated, Lana mostly wears hospital gowns, so that would make for a very easy costume.

However, when she’s out and about, she’s seen sporting some excellent 60s and 70s gear.

Sally Ride

Sally Ride

Ride entered space on the Challenger shuttle in June 1983, becoming the first American woman and youngest ever American to do so.

Following Ride’s death in 2012, it was made public that the former NASA astronaut had been in a secret 27-year-long relationship with female partner Tam O’Shaughnessy.

She has been posthumously referred to as the first lesbian astronaut.

If you want to dress up as a real-life person, Ride is clearly the way to go.

Ennis Del Mar and Jack Twist – Brokeback Mountain

This 2005 Oscar-winning film adaptation stars Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal as two cowboys trying to reconcile their feelings for each other in a deeply homophobic society.

A couple of cowboy hats and some denim shirts, and you’ll be Ennis and Jack in no time.
