A live action Pokémon series is in early development at Netflix – what we know so far

Pokemon Detective Pikachu

A new live action Pokémon show is reportedly on the way to Netflix.

According to Variety, the series is currently in early development although no details are known about the plot.

Joe Henderson is said to be onboard as writer and executive producer. Henderson is currently co-showrunner and executive producer on the Netflix series Lucifer.

The Pokémon series is set to be live-action, in a similar vein to the Ryan Reynolds and Justice Smith starring Detective Pikachu film from 2019. Reynolds was the voice of the titular Pikachu who teams up with Smith’s character in a city where humans and Pokémon live harmoniously.

Does this mean we won’t get a sequel to the film? Perhaps.

Netflix and Henderson are yet to officially comment themselves.

There is already a wealth of video game content available on Netflix, including Pokémon.

That includes the series Pokémon: Indigo League and Pokémon Journeys, as well as the film Pokémon the Movie: I Choose You!

Other video game series include the Castlevania anime, the new Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness show, and the popular Henry Cavill starring The Witcher.

Speaking of the latter, a new anime film The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf is on its way to the streaming service.

Rather than Geralt, the film will focus on his mentor Vesemir, though many years before the events of the books or films.

Netflix is also looking to add video games to the subscription service at no extra cost.

According to Axios, the service is in the early stages and will be a mobile game service similar to “a smaller Apple Arcade”.

It will have a mixture of licensed Netflix IPs and original work commissioned from independent studios, but isn’t expected until 2022.
