Issa Rae wore a £4 eye shadow to the Emmys for a stunning, disco-inspired makeup look

Issa Rae's Emmy red carpet eye makeup look cost £10.

Issa Rae’s makeup on the Emmy Awards red carpet proves you don’t need to break the bank to pull off a stunning look.

The Insecure creator and star turned out a disco-inspired, purple eye beauty moment at the star-studded Emmy Awards.

The six-time Emmy nominee was up for a gong for A Black Lady Sketch Show which she produces and co-stars in and showcased an award-winning look.

It consisted of E.L.F. cosmetics products and was applied by makeup artist Joanna Simkin, who told Allure she was “instantly inspired to do a sparkly purple eye shadow and fluttery lashes.”

This was to “accentuate Issa’s gorgeous features while playing up a bold statement eye,” and match her custom Aliétte gown, which “felt like a nod to the 70s, Studio 54 and disco glam.”

All of the items in Rae’s lavender look are less than $15/£16 including the E.L.F Bite Size Shadow palette in Açaí You for $3/£4 and the E.L.F. Liquid Metallic Eyeshadow for $5/£6.

Her talented makeup artist, Simkin applied the darkest of the four shades in the palette on the outer corners of the eye, then brought them into the crease for a smoked out effect. To keep the look bright, she then added the creamy shimmer shade in the center of the lids.

She finished the bold eye with two “generous” coats of Big Mood Mega Volume & Lifting Mascara, and then used Wow Brow Gel to fill in the brows.

When she walked the red carpet at the Emmy Awards, Rae also revealed another key part of her look: a silver grill across her bottom teeth which complimented her sparkling gown.

Emmy Awards criticised for lack of diversity

Despite boasting one of the most diverse set of Emmy Award nominations in history with a record 49 people of colour recognised in the acting and reality competition categories, not a single one of them were presented with an award.

Among those overlooked include Billy Porter and Mj Rodriguez for Pose, Kenan Thompson and Bowen Yang for Saturday Night Live and Issa Rae for A Black Lady Sketch Show.

This prompted the hashtag #EmmysSoWhite to begin trending online as the awards were criticised for “performative” representation.

President of the Color of Change campaign movement said: “The fact that the #Emmys2021 has so many Black and brown people hosting, and so few winning, is another example of performative ‘commitments’ to representation.”
