Kathy Griffin triumphantly declares she’s cancer-free after having half a lung removed

Kathy Griffin has revealed she is officially in remission after undergoing surgery to remove part of her lung.

The comedian, 61, shared the happy update during her appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Tuesday (30 November), three months after she first revealed her cancer diagnosis.

The My Life on the D-List star stated: “I’m cancer-free. I don’t know why, I had a tumour, right? And I’ve never smoked, and it was in there for 10 years. So get this, they took it out and found it in another scan.”

Griffin opened up about the procedure to remove part of her lung as she continued: “So, I go in, and he’s like describing how they take half your lung out, and he goes, ‘It’s kind of a like a balloon.’

“So, we do it laparoscopically and we poke it, then he goes, ‘And when we take it out, kind of looks like a used condom.'”

The comic noted her doctor’s attempt at humour as she added: ‘And then he goes, ‘You can use that.’ And I just did – and insurance covered it.”

Kathy Griffin also pointed out the change in her voice during the interview as she revealed her vocal cords were still recovering following the procedure.

She stated: “So now I’m like Minnie Mouse meets Marilyn Monroe. It will heal, but I’m sort of enjoying it. I’m a good two octaves higher, I think … it’s higher than Mariah Carey.”

When Kathy Griffin first shared the news of her diagnosis in August, the former Fashion Police host encouraged her fans to stay “up to date on your medical checkups”.

In a post shared on social media, she wrote: “I’ve got to tell you guys something. I have cancer. I’m about to go into surgery to have half of my left lung removed.

“Yes, I have lung cancer even though I’ve never smoked! The doctors are very optimistic as it is stage one and contained to my left lung.”

She continued: “Hopefully no chemo or radiation after this and I should have normal function with my breathing. I should be up and running around as usual in a month or less.”

Griffin added that she has been vaccinated against coronavirus and warned that “the consequences for being unvaccinated would have been even more serious”.

Meanwhile, the comedian recently clapped back at a protester who called vaccine mandates “gay”.
