Kathy Griffin lied about cancer returning to avoid ‘anti-gay’ driver

Comedian Kathy Griffin

Comedian Kathy Griffin has shared that she recently lied about her cancer coming back in order to get out of “weird” conversations with an “anti-gay” private car driver in Minnesota.

Griffin told the story while appearing on The View on 24 April to promote her new tour, New Face, New Tour.

“When I had the driver in Minneapolis, he presented as a nice gentleman of caucasian persuasion,” she shared.

“I will admit that the conversations to and from the gig, he’d start to say stuff that made me uncomfortable, maybe an anti-gay thing, [something] racial.”

The comedian went on to mention how the driver made comments when they drove past George Floyd’s memorial, saying: “If only people would comply.”

“I just didn’t feel right, I’ve never done anything like this, it’s so lame. I just started making up a story to the driver,” she said. She went on to explain how she made up a fake cousin named Jill who she said was going to give her a ride to the airport instead of the driver.

“This driver knows that he’s the driver,” Griffin continued. “My tour manager is helping me, she’s like, ‘And she’s sick!’ I go, ‘And my cancer’s back!’ Then he finally stops the car, which, my cancer isn’t back, I just played that card.”

After unloading her luggage from the car, the driver then asked Griffin where ‘Jill’ lived, and both Griffin and her manager accidentally pointed in different directions. She eventually took an Uber to the airport instead.

“Sometimes you have to speak up,” Griffin concluded. “It was very awkward. I felt, enough with the weird comments.”
