Drag Race ups the stakes for season 14 finale – and honey, we’re all gagged

RuPaul’s Drag Race keeps getting bigger and better, and that includes the prize money.

Season 14 is officially making herstory, as it’s been confirmed that the upcoming winner will bag the show’s highest-ever cash prize – $150,000 (£114,000). It pays to be a winner, baby!

For those who don’t remember, the season one winner Bebe Zahara took home $20,000 back in 2009, while winning queens have received $100,000 since season four.

VH1 confirmed the exciting news on Thursday (8 April), as it was also revealed that for the first time runner-up will also sashay away with $50,000 ($38,000) – funded by Cash App.

Season 14 of Drag Race has won mixed reviews – it features what has been described as the worst Snatch Game in herstory, but the following week’s LaLaPaRuZa lip-sync smackdown left viewers gagged, while the ‘Moulin Ru’ Rusical was hailed one of the best ever.

Many fans were frustrated at the slow progress of the competition, with RuPaul doling out double shantays and in one week, declining to even name a bottom two.

But after a season that has seen rules bent and tossed aside, the cast has been whittled down to a top five after last week’s three-way lip sync and double elimination.

Angeria Paris VanMicheals, Bosco, Willow Pill, Lady Camden and Daya Betty are in the running to become America’s Next Drag Superstar.

April 22 will see the finalists battle it out in an epic lip sync as they compete live from the Flamingo Showroom, which is currently home to the RuPaul’s Drag Race Live show.

This weekend will see the queens take on the all-important Ru-mix. Then, the Season 14 reunion will air on April 15, one week before the finale to reflect on highlights from the season.

It’s been confirmed that another All Stars season will follow this year’s civilian Drag Race – and it’s all but confirmed to be an all winners’ season. A premiere date is yet to be announced.
