MTV Movie & TV Awards 2022: RuPaul’s Drag Race, Heartstopper and Euphoria win big

Euphoria and Zendaya sweep up at MTV Awards

RuPaul’s Drag Race, queer teen romance Heartstopper and hit HBO series Euphoria have all won big at this year’s MTV Movie & TV Awards.

At a ceremony which saw Heartstopper take home Best Musical Moment and Jackass unexpectedly winning Best Kiss (between a cast member and a snake), Euphoria nabbed four coveted golden popcorn trophies for Best Show, Best Performance in a Show (won by Zendaya), Best Fight and Here For the Hookup.

The MTV’s celebration of all things reality television, MTV Movie & TV Awards: Unscripted, saw global phenomenon RuPaul’s Drag Race win Best Competition Series and Best Fight for the legendary lip sync between Bosco and Lady Camden in season 14.

“I would like to thank Lady Camden [their Best Fight rival] for not being here so I could accept this alone,” Bosco said while accepting their award.

“And I would like to thank all of you for apparently enjoying gay people.”

Accepting Drag Race‘s win were RuPaul along with four series 14 contestants, who praised the show for its “most trans-inclusive cast in Drag Race ‘her-story’.”

RuPaul added: “I want to thank our queens, who bravely share their stories to help spread love, light and laughter around the world… this award belongs to you.”

Accepting her award for Best Performance in a Show via video message, Zendaya, who plays Rue, a character struggling with addiction, said: “Thank you so, so, so much for this honour.

“Thank you to all the fans who have shown so much love to Euphoria, it means the world to the cast and crew, the show means so much to us and we really, really, really are so honoured that it means so much to you.

“Thank you for your love and thank you for this very special award,” she said, blowing a kiss to the camera.

Euphoria first aired in 2019, and has been praised for being “one of the most groundbreaking LGBTQ+ shows”.

Dealing with themes of drug addiction, sexual assault and mental illness, the series centres around Rue and Jules (Hunter Schafer), who struggle with their on-off relationship alongside a host of personal issues.

Zendaya herself warned fans before the release of series two that the show would be difficult to watch, and could contain “triggering” moments.

“This season, maybe even more so than the last, is deeply emotional and deals with subject matter that can be triggering and difficult to watch,” she said on Twitter.

“Please only watch it if you feel comfortable. Take care of yourself and know that either way you are still loved and I can still feel your support.”

She added in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that she hoped anyone watching who struggles with addiction could feel “a little bit less alone” watching her character.

“Our show is in no way a moral tale to teach people how to live their life or what they should be doing,” she said.

“If anything, the feeling behind Euphoria, or whatever we have always been trying to do with it, is to hopefully help people feel a little bit less alone in their experience and their pain.”
