A clip of Harry Styles and Chris Pine at the Don’t Worry Darling premiere has the internet in chaos.
Fans have been up all night processing wild claims that Harry Styles spat on Chris Pine, sparked by a blurry video of the two actors.
Let’s lay the scene. It’s the premier of the highly-anticipated Don’t Worry Darling film, directed by Olivia Wilde and starring Pine, Styles and Florence Pugh.
It comes after months of alleged behind-the-scenes drama, culminating in a press tour plagued by rumours of possible tensions between Pugh and super-couple, Wilde and Styles. Pine has generally managed to keep at arm’s length from the rumours, but he has spoken out in support of Pugh in the past.
And so here we are, the cast coming together for the film’s premiere at the Venice Film Festival. Harry Styles takes his seat next to Chris Pine, and video footage of the pair’s apparently awkward interactions sparks a blaze.
Twitter has torn itself apart with theories, slow motioned videos and different camera angles trying to get to the bottom of what happened.
“People thinking Harry Styles spat on Chris Pine is THE funniest development in this drama like the gift that keeps on giving,” one person wrote.
While another felt it was “a much more compelling piece of drama” than the “misogynistic rhetoric” surrounding the the Pugh-Wilde drama.
One thing’s for sure, “not even Riverdale would have come up with something this crazy”, one person wrote.
Of course, many theories have sprung up. So what are they?
Aside from the absurd suggestion that Styles maliciously spat on Pine in view of the world’s press, leading to Pine’s disgruntled and baffling reaction, it’s also been posited that Styles could have accidentally spat on him.
Another more likely theory says that Styles of course didn’t spit on Pine, but that Pine just happened to look down at his lap at the same time Styles sat down, and spotted his potentially lost sunglasses.
Who hasn’t been looking for their glasses for ages before realising they were on their head the whole time?
Update: After publication, a representative for Chris Pine confirmed Harry Styles did not spit on him.
“This is a ridiculous story — a complete fabrication and the result of an odd online illusion that is clearly deceiving and allows for foolish speculation,” read a statement,
“Just to be clear, Harry Styles did not spit on Chris Pine. There is nothing but respect between these two men and any suggestion otherwise is a blatant attempt to create drama that simply does not exist.”
