The UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 kicked off with a rather disappointing game for England’s Lionesses, but not all hope is lost. They still have games against Wales and the Netherlands to come.
The England team took to the pitch for their first match against France at the weekend, Saturday 5 July, at Zurich’s Stadion Letzigrund.
Despite having multiple iconic footy stars on the team, such as Lucy Bronze, Jess Carter, Beth Mead, and Leah Williamson as the captain, the team conceded 2-1.
Keira Walsh’s late goal garnered some hope for the game, but the Lionesses couldn’t claw their way back to victory after two French goals from Marie-Antoinette Katoto and Sandy Baltimore.
However, England could still win the Euros. The Lionesses are set to face Wales (officially the gayest team at the Euros) and the Netherlands for their Group D games, and we’re hoping for some more goals!

Can England still win the Euros?
Many pundits see Group D as the toughest of the tournament, and despite what the bookies say, we’re holding out hope the Lionesses will be able to advance to the quarter-finals.
England’s next game on Wednesday (9 July) is now very important. If they lose to the Netherlands and France beat tournament debutants Wales, who lost 3-0 to the Dutch, the Lionesses may find themselves out of the Euros.
The game against France wasn’t the start we were hoping for from the team that entered the tournament as champions.
Captain Leah Williamson reportedly said the Lionesses need to take “responsibility” for their performance.
“We lost the game with poor defending one-on-one,” she added. “Not good enough with the ball, we weren’t good enough.”
England manager Sarina Wiegman was also frustrated with the defeat.
“Of course, I’m very disappointed,” said Wiegman. “I think we started well. After that we created chances (for France) by playing short passes all the time. We were a bit sloppy too.”

When is the Lionesses’ next game?
England are in Group D, alongside France, Wales and the Netherlands and have another two games before the quarter-finals.
The Lionesses’ next game is against the Netherlands on Wednesday 9 July, with a 5pm BST start.
England’s Group D games will come to an end Wales on Sunday 13 July from 8pm BST.
The top two teams from each group go through to the quarter-finals. These games will take place between 16 July and 19 July.
If England win their group, they will play the runner-up of Group C, which could be any one of Germany, Poland, Denmark or Sweden.
The semi-finals are in Zurich and Geneva on 22 and 23 July. The Women’s Euros 2025 final is set for 27 July in Basel.
