Jamie Lee Curtis is facing a backlash after she seemed to shush gay comedians Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers and tell them to “bring the whole f**king thing down”, at last week’s Las Culturistas Culture Awards.
The awards celebrate the “most… consequential moments of the year”, handing out awards such as woman of a certain age, and the most iconic building or structure.
The co-hosts were speaking to Vulture on the red carpet about a pop culture quote that’s stuck in their head. “You know what just jumped [into] my head?” Fire Island star Rogers said. “Legally Blonde. Elle Woods: ‘What, like, it’s hard.’”
Bowen Yang, best-known for The Wedding Banquet, chimed in: “Mine is gonna be Julia Roberts in Erin Brockovich,” before doing an impression of the line: “I’m not talking to you, b*tch!”
Overhearing Yang’s impression, Jamie Lee Curtis stepped away from a separate interview, walked over to them and said: “Whoa”, before seemingly telling them to talk more quietly by lowering her hands while seemingly shushing them.
Rogers replied: “We’re quoting Julia Roberts.”
Curtis continued: “Listen, bring the whole fu**ing thing down.”
Yang then proclaimed: “You’re gonna hate the show,” and Rogers added, “We’ll sit you in the back,” and, referring to Curtis’ energy: “Hey, maybe you could bring it up.”
It seems a bizarre moment from Curtis, who is known to be an LGBTQ+ ally. She has regularly made appearances at events with her trans daughter and called for action in the face of Donald Trump’s presidential victory.
In the comments on the Vulture post, some people questioning her actions. One said: “Jamie Lee embodying Karen energy.” Another wrote on X/Twitter: “I did not expect a video from the Las Culturistas red carpet to be the first time I’ve ever felt triggered. Jamie Lee Curtis sucks a**.
“This is exactly how sh**ty adults would treat me as a loud gay theatre kid. Doing this to them at their own event? She truly repulses me.” The post has 34,000 thousand likes and been viewed 5.7 million times.
Someone else said: “I love Bowen’s ‘you’re gonna hate this whole f**king show then’.” That reply has clocked up 2.7 million views.
Others shared: “I love that they snapped back at her immediately,” and, “This made me cringe. Holy s**t.”
