Fifteen years after he appeared in Inception, Elliot Page is reuniting with Christopher Nolan for The Odyssey. The actor said the reunion was now “more comfortable”  and “enjoyable” because he feels truly himself post-transition.

In Nolan’s 2010 mind-bending thriller, the actor played Ariadne, which is also the name of a character in Homer’s epic tale about Greek hero Odysseus’ voyage home after the Trojan War.

Page came out as a trans man in 2020, writing on social media: “Hi friends, I want to share with you that I am trans, my pronouns are he/they and my name is Elliot.”

Nolan’s new film is due out next summer, and appearing on an X-Men: Days of Future Past panel at the New York City Comic Con on Sunday (12 October), Page couldn’t hide his joy at being cast in the epic adventure.

“I was so excited to be thought of for [The Odyssey] and to be asked to come back to work with him,” Page said of Nolan. “I loved working with him on Inception, loved being a part of that movie.

“I was just jazzed and excited, and [I] basically went and met with Chris and talked about the part, then sat in a room and read the script. It was such a joy to come back.

“To come back now, as you can imagine, being more comfortable in yourself makes these sorts of projects more enjoyable, the trans star added. “To get to have a Chris Nolan experience again meant so much to me.”

The Odyssey was written possibly as long ago as the 8th century BCE, making it one of the oldest surviving works of literature. The story follows king of Ithaca Odysseus’ 10-year trek home, during which he encounters mythical creatures and gods.

While he was away, his wife and son have had to fend off individuals vying for the throne.

Nolan has been secretive about much of the casting so Page’s role had not been revealed but he will be joining Matt Damon, who is playing Odysseus, and Tom Holland (as the hero’s son Telemachus) and his Spider-man co-star Zendaya, as well as Lupita Nyong’o, Charlize Theron, Anne Hathaway and Robert Pattinson.

The Odyssey is set to be released in July.
