Hackers change Brigitte Macron’s legal name to ‘Jean-Michel’ on her tax records

Brigitte Macron’s personal tax records have been hacked and altered to identify her as male, according to her chief of staff. 

In an interview with French news channel BFMTV, Tristan Bromet revealed that hackers changed the first lady of France’s name in the government system to “Jean-Michel, known as Brigitte Macron,” in reference to a long-running conspiracy theory that she was born male. 

According to the theory, Macron’s maiden name, Trogneux, belonged to a male identity. 

Bromet said Macron, who has been married to French president Emmanuel for 18 years and has three children, was “completely surprised” to discover the change when she logged into her account. The section where her name appeared “can’t be changed” by users themselves, and two individuals involved in the hack have been identified, he added.

Macron has filed a formal complaint. 

The revelation came as the trial of 10 people, charged with the sexist cyberbullying of the first lady, relating to the same conspiracy, got under way in Paris on Monday (27 October). 

The couple filed a defamation lawsuit against right-wing US pundit Candace Owens in July over new claims that Brigitte was transgender. Last month, they presented photographic and scientific evidence about her identity to the Delaware court. They are seeking unspecified damages.

Owens’ lawyers responded with a motion to dismiss. 

Macron has long been hounded by the claims, which resurfaced in June 2024. Her husband has been forced to address the rumours, denouncing them as “fabricated scenarios”, adding: “People eventually believe them and disturb you, even in your intimacy.”
