Married At First Sight (MAFS) Australia star Julia Vogl has confirmed that she’s in a same-sex romance after splitting from her TV groom.
On MAFS Australia, Vogl, who made history as the show’s first openly bisexual bride, was paired with Queensland-based entrepreneur Grayson McIvor, who she was open with about her bisexuality.
In an interview with the Daily Mail, Vogl confirmed that she has “never been happier” after meeting someone a couple of months after the experiment finished filming.
The 35-year-old explained that she met her new partner at a singing lesson.
“I went to have a singing lesson with this woman and I realised pretty quickly that there was just a spark there,” she shared, adding: “I stopped getting singing lessons from her because I didn’t want her to be my teacher.
“We started just hanging out. It was a slow process… it took me quite a while to come out of the whole experiment and that experience… we’re still together now.”
During her time on MAFS Australia, Vogl’s openness about her sexuality sadly led to some biphobic comments.
Bisexual people often experience erasure, bigotry and straight-up ignorance in their everyday lives.
She said of Grayson’s suggestion that she “wanted a woman”: ”Suggesting that because I wasn’t interested in this one man, therefore I must be a lesbian, it’s a cop out, and it feels really harmful. Often bisexuals feel misunderstood and unseen, and this is just another classic example of this happening.”
LGBTQ+ charity Stonewall defines bisexuality as an “umbrella term” which describes a romantic and/or sexual orientation towards more than one gender.
Bisexual people may also describe themselves using one or more of a wide variety of terms, including, but not limited to, bisexual, pan, queer, and some other non-monosexual and non-monoromantic identities.
