John Waters celebrated his 80th birthday in signature subversive style with a cake topped by an image of a “Rush” brand poppers bottle.
Photos from the celebration were shared on social media on 19 April by Rajendra Roy and offered a glimpse into the filmmaker’s delightful party just days ahead of his official 22 April birthday.
The gathering brought together a mix of icons and collaborators, including Debbie Harry, Sean Baker, and Ricki Lake, all celebrating the iconic cult director known for pushing boundaries in film and queer culture.
Long celebrated for his unapologetically camp sensibility, Waters continues to embrace the weird, the wild, and the wonderful, and if his 80th birthday celebration is any indication, he’s not toning it down anytime soon.
John Waters’ career
The world has John Waters to thank for cult classic movies like Pink Flamingos (1972) and Female Trouble (1974), both of which starred iconic drag queen Divine.
He also wrote and directed the 1988 film Hairspray. The movie, which was Divine’s final role before their death, was eventually adapted for Broadway and then made into a musical film, starring Zac Efron, Michelle Pfeiffer, John Travolta, Queen Latifah, and Brittany Snow, among other huge names.
Younger fans might recognise him from a RuPaul’s Drag Race season 7 episode, on which he was a guest judge.
