Cynthia Erivo has been praised for stopping her one-woman show Dracula after catching an audience member filming the performance.
A TikTok video posted on 28 April by user jesusontour_ shows the curtain coming down during the performance while an in-house tannoy announcement thanks the audience for their patience and asks them to remain in their seats.
Overlaid text from the user reads: “Not Cynthia Erivo clocking someone filming in the audience during Dracula and stopping the whole show.”
The TikTok user went on to comment that Erivo “stopped the show for like 10 minutes”. When asked how far into the show it was paused, they confirmed it had been running for about an hour.
Some social media users were quick to jump to the actress’ defense.
“Mind you, this woman ran the London Marathon the day before in just over 3 hours and then is playing 23 different characters for the show 24 hours later,” one user wrote. “I don’t blame her for stopping it because it is that deep.”
“Cynthia really said: ‘you preach theatre etiquette, put your phone away,’” said another.
Others users criticised jesusontour_ for filming the aftermath. “Hang on, isn’t the person filming this clip also filming?” wrote one.

Erivo’s Dracula has gained a lot of media attention since its run began, owing to her playing a whopping 23 different characters in the almost two-hour-long show.
Most recently, Erivo herself impressed the internet for the “gracious” and “patient” way she handled an upset fan at the stage door.
During the tense encounter outside London’s Noël Coward Theatre, the star managed to calmly cool down the furious fan after they claimed to have been “attacked” while waiting outside the show.
A two-minute video clip circulated on social media showed Cynthia Erivo urging the distressed man to “take a breath”. Fans of the actress look bemused as she swiftly manages to de-escalate the situation.
“I need you to take a breath. Baby, I need you to take a breath. Just stop,” she said, as the man hurriedly tried to explain that he was pushed to the ground by another man. The full context of the incident wasn’t clear from the clip.
