English singer Perrie Edwards has reflected on Little Mix’s decision to fly the Pride flag during a 2019 performance in Dubai, despite their team’s concerns over the United Arab Emirates’ stance on LGBTQ+ rights.
Speaking to Attitude on 26 May ahead of her appearance at Mighty Hoopla, Edwards said the group understood there could be consequences, but ultimately felt that supporting their fans mattered more.
“I remember our team stressing,” Edwards said, recalling fears the group could face issues at the airport after the performance. “At the end of the day, we did it because we wanted to do it… And we were like, ‘Oh well, let them try.’”
She added that Little Mix’s LGBTQ+ fanbase has “been such a core fanbase for so many years”, describing the relationship as “a two-way street”.
“It was a moment that meant so much to so many people at the time,” she continued. “And if that was going to get us in trouble, then so be it. We didn’t really care about that. We do everything for our fans and for the people that support us.”
Edwards also said performing the band’s song “Secret Love Song” remains one of her favourite Pride-related memories because of the emotional response it receives from audiences.
Elsewhere in the interview, Edwards confirmed she believes a Little Mix reunion will eventually happen, saying “Oh, 100%” when asked if the group would reunite. She clarified that any future comeback would likely be “as a three”. The singer also discussed parenting in today’s political climate, saying she wants her children to “be themselves, make their own decisions, be happy in their own skin”, and know they can “love who you want to love”.
