Cara Delevingne says she’s a ‘very proud lesbian’ after being uncomfortable with labels

Cara Delevingne is opening up about embracing a label she once struggled to claim.

In a 29 May interview with Variety, the actor, model and musician said she is now “very happy” to identify as a lesbian, despite always feeling uncomfortable with labels.

The conversation comes weeks after Delevingne, who is stepping into music, told a concert audience: “If you didn’t know already, I’m a lesbian,” a remark that sparked debate online because of her previous relationships with men.

Addressing the reaction, she said: “People love to comment on stuff like that, like, ‘She’s not gay, she’s pan,’ or ‘She’s had boyfriends,’ and like… yes, I have, but at this point in my life I’m very happy to say I’m a lesbian.”

While Delevingne said she has “always hated labels”, she explained that her relationship with British singer-songwriter Minke has helped her better understand what she wants from the future. “I don’t see myself being with anyone else for the rest of my life, and I want to have a family with this woman,” she said. “So, yes, I’m a very proud lesbian.”

The star also reflected on the role internalised homophobia played in her relationship with the word “lesbian”. “There was something about my own internalised homophobia where that word was something I really didn’t want to say or admit,” she shared, adding that seeing younger LGBTQ+ people embrace their identities and be proud helped shift her perspective.

Elsewhere in the interview, Delevingne spoke warmly about her partner Minke, describing her as her “biggest champion”. The couple first met as teenagers while attending boarding school together in England, and Delevingne said she admired Minke long before they reconnected over a decade later at an Alanis Morissette concert and became partners in 2022.
