BBC Radio DJ Sara Cox says she’s ‘proudly’ mum of queer daughter

BBC Radio DJ Sara Cox has shared that she is “proudly” the mother of a queer daughter in a recent on-air chat with non-binary singer Sam Smith.
During Smith’s appearance on The Sara Cox Breakfast Show on 27 July, they spoke about their new single, ‘Oh Mother’, which they said is an homage to their mother, Kate Cassidy.
“All mums want a song written about them,” Cox said, to which Smith agreed.
“Especially queer kids, gay kids and their mums have – well at least I have a very strong, beautiful relationship with my mother,” they added.
Cox then said: “I’m proudly one of them by the way, with a queer daughter,” to which Smith replied: “Beautiful!”
The presenter is the parent of daughter Lola, who is 22, with her ex-partner Jon Carter. She also has a son, 18-year-old Isaac, and another daughter, 16-year-old Renee with her husband, Ben Cyzer. However, she did not specify which daughter is queer.
“In this song I was just trying to access my mum’s fury and protection that comes to save the day when a child gets hurt or heartbroken,” Smith continued.
The pair then bonded over a discussion about parenthood in general.
“As I’m getting older, I feel like I’m becoming more maternal and more definitely hungry one day to have children myself and things like that,” Smith mused. “So it definitely felt like a maturing theme to step into for me, which was really great.”
Cox replied: “I mean, she’s there for you through the tough times and even as you say as a kid, but even as a grown up, your mum’s always going to be there for you.”
“Oh my gosh, yeah, I mean, my dad and my mum, my sisters, my whole family have been a rock for me through everything I’ve gone through,” Smith said.
