Paul Mescal calls for ‘respect and safety’ in first public statement on trans rights

Paul Mescal

All of Us Strangers star Paul Mescal has declared his support for the trans community publicly for the first time, ahead of the return of London Trans+ Pride (LT+P) this July.

The History of Sound actor joins Spice Girls star Mel B, Hackney Mayor Zoë Garbett, actress Michaela Coel, singer Jessie Ware, presenter Jameela Jamil, activist Munroe Bergdorf, politician Jeremy Corbyn and Heartstopper star Yasmin Finney, as well as many more, in sharing messages of solidarity.

Mescal said: “I’m incredibly proud to stand in support of my trans friends and the wider trans community.

“Given the political climate at the moment it feels more and more pressing that we make our voices heard. This is a moment for respect, safety and recognition. Trans rights are human rights.”

The theme of this year’s LT+P is “Our Future, Our Fight”. It will return to central London on Saturday, 25 July for its eighth march and protest.

It comes after the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) presented its updated Code of Practice to Parliament on 21 May, which trans rights organisation TransActual warned left trans people with fewer protections than before.

LT+P is also inviting allies to march with the trans+ community on 25 July, after last year’s turnout of 100,000 people.

Dani St James of Not A Phase said: “Shelve passive allyship and step into active advocacy. Show up on the streets and then take that same energy to your workplace, your social circles, your local pub, and your polling booth.”
